Using the MS Office spelling checker in Tstream Editor Studio

As of the release of Tstream Editor Studio 4, you can integrate the Microsoft Office spelling checkers and the Microsoft Proofing tools in our translation editor. Unfortunately, the integration will only work in a Windows environment with Microsoft Office spelling checkers installed. Mac-users or Linux-users will need to acquire Windows-emulating software such as Parallels Desktop or VM-Ware.

Integration only takes a few minutes of your time — time you will almost certainly win back later.
Here’s how.

Tstream Editor Studio is created using the programming language Java. As Java applications and MS Office don’t speak the same language, you have to install a connector software. The Xplanation Spelling Checker Connector software requires Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, which is probably already installed on your machine. Installing it twice won’t do any harm but if you want to be on the safe side and not lose time, open the “Add or Remove Programs” on the Control Panel to check your installed software. The picture beneath shows you the exact wording and the version of the Microsoft .NET Framework in the support information dialog. You need version 1.1.4322; other versions won’t work.

If Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is installed on your machine, we can continue.
If it’s not, you can download the installer from the Microsoft site or from our ftp-site. Once the installer is downloaded, double-click it and confirm that you want to install the .NET Framework.

Note that you must have full installation rights on your machine. If you need help with installing and you are working in a network environment, contact your system administrator.

Installing our connector software

The sole task of this little piece of software is to communicate with the Microsoft spelling checkers, nothing more.
Click Xplanation SpellingChecker Connector software to download the installer. Windows will probably warn you that this is software and that software can harm your computer. Well, you can trust this one: confirm and then choose “Run” or “Save” and click OK.
• With “Run”, the installer is not actually downloaded, it only installs over the Internet.
• With “Save” you download the installer to the directory of your choice. Then you launch the installation by double-clicking the downloaded file.

Microsoft .NET Framework is activated after restarting Windows. Without restarting Windows you can’t use the MS Office spelling checkers in Tstream Editor Studio.

You can see if the installation was successful by starting Tstream Editor Studio and going to the Tools menu, Preferences. If the display of the Preferences dialog takes a couple of seconds Tstream Editor Studio has communicated with Microsoft Office and has tested the installed spelling checker dictionaries.
To make the test conclusive, go to the “Spelling Checking” tab in the preferences dialog.

Click your translation language in the list on the left. The panel on the right will be updated with the preferred settings for the selected language. “Microsoft Office” should be checked and enabled in the “Preferred checker” group.

Note that the “Microsoft Office custom dictionaries” list contains all extra Microsoft Proofing Tools dictionaries that you activated in Microsoft Word.

That’s it. You can spell check with the accuracy of Microsoft Office at the speed and ease of use of Tstream Editor Studio.
And remember, you can always contact our support people if you need help.

Next week, some more tricks to speed up spelling checking.
